About Me

My journey as a writer began as a child. I wrote poems and short stories which were my way of dealing with various life changing events. I am a member of Rave Reviews Book Club. Follow me on Twitter @KIngallsAuthor www.facebook.com/KarenIngalls, and you can find my books at www.amazon.com. My first book is Outshine: An Ovarian Cancer Memoir which received two awards. All proceeds are donated to gynecologic cancer research. My second book is a novel Novy's Son, about one man's attempt to find love and acceptance from his father. This is an all too common problem in our society. My third book, Davida: Model and Mistress of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is about the love affair between this great American sculptor and his model. MILITARY: & GLOBAL HEALTH ISSUES

A worldwide concern for all those who serve in the military, especially for those who see combat, is their health issues. These are some of the common ones:

                                  Chemical: Agent Orange, contaminated water
                                  Radiation: Nuclear weapons, x-rays
Air pollutants: Dust, burn pit smoke
                                  Occupational: Asbestos, lead
Warfare agents: Chemical & biological weapons
                                  Psychological: Post Traumatic Syndrome

Yet, war is a fact throughout the history of the human race.

MANY OF US AROUND THE WORLD FACE THESE SAME HEALTH CONCERNS, AND MORE. The health tips below are for everyone, not just the military.

                                              HEALTH/WELLNESS TIPS:

       1. Stop smoking. Stop smoking programs.
       2. Be up to date on vaccinations. Hepatitis A & B, polio, chicken pox, measles, mumps,
           rubella, tetanus and diptheria.
       3. Annual flu shot
       4. Teach ways to prevent the spread of infection (hand washing, avoid people
showing signs of a cold/flu, respiratory protection)
       5. Maintain normal weight with proper nutrition and exercise.

                                          RESOURCES FOR THE MILITARY:

WOUNDED WARRIORS is one program to help with finances, support, counseling, and equipment.

SOLDIERS' ANGELS whose motto is "may no soldier go unloved."

OPERATION INJURED SOLDIERS "...working to provide unique opportunities and experiences that are tailored to your needs and your family."

FISCHER HOUSE "helping military families."

                                          GLOBAL HEALTH RESOURCES:

           1. World Health Organization
           2. Major International Health Organization
           3. CDC Center for Global Health
           4. International Health Organization
           5. Fogarty International Center

My thanks to all those who sacrificed for world peace, and those individuals and organizations who provide health information, resources, and aide.

The ebola epidemic in Western Africa and the recent fears here in the United States, brings to the forefront that:
              1. We must give our bodies the healthiest choices.
              2. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, take vitamin supplements.
              3. Exercise
              4. Be up to date with immunizations
              5. Use hand washing and appropriate respiratory precautions.
              6. Do not smoke.
