About Me

My photo
My journey as a writer began as a child. I wrote poems and short stories which were my way of dealing with various life changing events. I am a member of Rave Reviews Book Club. Follow me on Twitter @KIngallsAuthor www.facebook.com/KarenIngalls, and you can find my books at www.amazon.com. My first book is Outshine: An Ovarian Cancer Memoir which received two awards. All proceeds are donated to gynecologic cancer research. My second book is a novel Novy's Son, about one man's attempt to find love and acceptance from his father. This is an all too common problem in our society. My third book, Davida: Model and Mistress of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is about the love affair between this great American sculptor and his model. ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING!

Recently a dear friend’s son wrote about the importance of a positive and loving attitude while facing any challenge. He writes this while facing advanced colon cancer. An 18 year old with Stage IV esophageal cancer does not "give in to all that negativity" but uses one word for his future prospects: "Excited." The saying about “the glass being half full” always offers a perspective of hope.

We have all heard about the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other, or the good wolf versus the bad wolf. When we allow bitterness, anger, jealousy, or selfishness control our decisions and actions then are we able to achieve our goals? If it is the bad wolf in control of our attitude, our goals might be achieved, but at what price? This is the central theme of my recent novel, Novy’s Son, The Selfish Genius (www.amazon.com)

How to change a negative attitude to a positive one:

          1. Never compare yourself to others.
          2. Set a goal and try to reach it.
          3. Set a goal for things you are lacking (finances, friends, job, etc.)
          4. Give everything a chance before rejecting it.
          5. Keep yourself well groomed (look how you want to feel).
          6. Let others know how their negativity is affecting you.
          7. Stay upbeat.
          8. Be active in things that make you happy.
          9. SMILE.

Even as a young person I was inspired by such people as Norman Vincent Peale, Albert Schweitzer, Marion Anderson, Gandhi, and Jesus.
Today my role models include those people who face adversity with strength, positivity, and a belief that when we live each moment with love and optimism we can "outshine any challenge or bad wolf."

For the most part is your attitude positive or negative?
Are the people in your life smiling or frowning?
Is your glass half full or half empty?

BOOK BLOG TOUR: NONNIE JULES

Hello, and welcome to day nine of my “HAPPY BIRTHDAY:  ARE YOU WATCHING NONNIE WRITE? ” Blog Tour,  and  today I’m here with my fellow book club member, Karen Ingalls!  I’m sure by now you all have heard of RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB…it’s all the “rave” with almost everyone in the Indie publishing arena and if you haven’t joined yet, you can do so by heading to RaveReviewsByNonnieJules.wordpress.com ! Since we’re in Karen’s house today, I will let her tell you more about it.
This month marks the one year anniversary of my burst onto the social media scene and also the one year anniversary of my blog, WATCH NONNIE WRITE!  During that time, I have published three REALLY GOOD books and have learned so very much about the industry.  Although I’ve been a writer for most of my life (actually, I was born one), I only just became a published author in 2013.  Some might say, “In that short amount of time, what does she know?” Well, I’m here to tell you that “SHE” has learned a lot!  SHE” has taken the time to hone her skills in the writing department as well as her knowledge.  SHE” has taken the bull by the horn and run full speed ahead in building her author platform and establishing herself in the writing industry.  SHE” is making her name KNOWN.
On each stop of my tour, I am sharing with you tips on writing, publishing and support, all topics equally important to the writing industry.  I hope that what I am imparting, you will take, mull over, and then act on in the best interest of YOU.
With that being said, here is…
“SPOTLIGHTING” ONLY THE BEST
If you’ve been following this tour of mine, you know that I am being allotted only a few minutes to get my little opinions out there for you all to enjoy, so I say what needs to be said and I make no apologies for any of it.  These are my opinions and of course, we’re all entitled.
I am a very different kind of character.  I believe in working hard at everything you do so that you can become the BEST at everything you do.  That being said, I take particular offense to those who just “skate thru” life and situations, instead of actually putting in the work.  This even applies in writing.  I find it to be a tad lazy to publish work that really isn’t publishable…work that isn’t ready to be profiled…work that isn’t yet suited for the eyes of the world.  Have you ever noticed some Book Reviewers saying, “I will only post 4 and 5 star reviews”…?  This says to me that said Reviewer only wants to “SPOTLIGHT” the best, and if your book doesn’t fall into that category, what does that say to you?  OK, that Reviewer is only one opinion.  But, what if Book Reviewer #2 has the same position as Book Reviewer #1, and she will only post 4 and 5 star reviews and once again, your book doesn’t fall into that category.  Now, what should that say to you?  This isn’t baseball, we don’t need 3 strikes here for you to get the message, do we?  Who do you think gets selected to play in the Baseball and Basketball All-Star Games every year?  ONLY THE BEST! (With the exception of the few fan-picks of the most popular guys on occasion, but they’re still considered the BEST).  The baseball league and the basketball league during those games, only want to “SPOTLIGHT” their BEST players.
I’ve shared all of that just to say this:  There are tons of places, companies, organizations and other entities in the world that only want to shine their light on the best, so why wouldn’t you want to make it a priority to always be your best and to always display your best?  Would you like to be left watching the ALL-STAR Games or playing in the ALL-STAR Games?  Do what needs to be done to put you in position to achieve that elite status.  Be ready at all times for someone to shine their “SPOTLIGHT” on you, whether it be a request for an interview or a publisher interested in signing you to their agency.  I’m always an ALL-STAR player and I hope that you’re one, too!
Thanks for allowing me to share with you today and if you’d like to follow my tour, please do so at www.nonniewrites.wordpress.com  and do share your thoughts!
Karen, thanks so much again for having me!  You’re also welcome at my place any time!

EASTER BLESSINGS

“Love paid a price so hope could become a reality.”

                                                   ― Susan Gaddis

As a butterfly soared overhead, one caterpillar said to the other, "You'll never get me up in one of those things."
Yet for every caterpillar the time comes when the urge to eat and grow subsides and he instinctively begins to form a chrysalis around himself. The chrysalis hardens and you'd think for all the world that the caterpillar is dead.
But one spring morning the life inside the chrysalis begins to writhe, the top cracks open, and a beautifully-formed butterfly emerges. For hours it will stand stretching and drying its wings, moving them slowly up and down, up and down. And then, before you know it, the butterfly glides aloft, effortlessly riding the currents of the air, alighting on flower after gorgeous flower, as if to show off its vivid colors to the bright blossoms. .
Somehow, the miracle of the butterfly never loses its fascination for us. Perhaps because the butterfly is a living parable of the promise of resurrection.

Easter is a time of love,
A time of death and pain undone,
So we may know the power of
The love that lives in everyone.
Each love we feel, unstained and free,
Redeems us--as with you and me.

Wishing you each a most blessed day and that the gifts of Easter may touch your hearts.

All proceeds from Outshine: An Ovarian Cancer Memoir go to gynecologic cancer research at Florida Hospital Cancer Institute. Thank you for your support.
